| Samenvatting | This article discusses the carnivalesque factor in the southern African HIV pandemic. The author hopes to demonstrate the need to move beyond current, gender-based theories of why HIV is so prevalent in southern Africa by arguing for a theory based on the idea of ‘carnivalesque’ culture, which better accounts for the current scientific facts about the epidemic, without discarding the relevance of gender altogether. |
