Abstract	A study was conducted of the characteristics of the production of biodiesel or ethanol from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) in Latin America. Topics include: (1) agronomy; (2) experiences thus far; (3) yields and biofuel productivity; (4) by-products; (5) the energy value of the crop per ha; (6) the potential contribution towards reducing the emission of greenhouse gases; (7) labour requirements; (8) crop profitability; and (9) the production cost of the biodiesel or ethanol.
