SamenvattingIn January 2005 the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan ended Africa’s longest civil war. This is a tremendous achievement. But the peace is fragile and doesn’t encompass the entire country. Oil is a principal factor in Sudanese politics. It is the government’s main source of income and the oil sector is driving economic growth. Meanwhile, the oil industry is poorly managed and highly politicized. Rather than contributing to an environment of peace and equitable development, it remains a source of strife and division. This dossier takes stock of Sudan’s economy, its oil industry, and the status of oil-related CPA provisions. The purpose of this dossier is to provide an overview of Sudan’s oil industry and serve as a background document to all those wishing to learn more about the country’s contentious oil issues. The many tables with data in the first two chapters help the reader to establish a picture of the realities of Sudan’s oil industry. The third chapter has a more analytical content and gives the reader a better understanding of the consequences of oil extraction on the lives of the Sudanese citizens.
