SamenvattingThis investigation is one of three case Studies that are being done in Central America as part of the Program on Social Movements and Citizenship in Central America, sponsored by HIVOS and ISS, from Holland. The perspective from which it has developed is known as “knowledge exchange” and is based in three premises:
1. Social participants are carriers of knowledge and learning that have the same value as knowledge and learning of academics. Each kind of knowledge and learning is different, but this does not imply superiority of one form of discourse over another; 2. The role of the researcher is to guide and stimulate an space for collective production of knowledge, by carrying out tasks of analysis, systemization, and socialization. She is expected to have extensive knowledge, experience and social engagement with the topic being investigated.; 3. The objectives, the methodology and research outputs should be discussed and defined with the social partners, ensuring maximum participation and contribution of analysis and interpretations on the subject of study. From the methodological point of view, the main challenge was to design methodologies that allow fluid dialogue and exchange between the movement leaders and researchers, seeking to balance the role that each actor must play in the research process. The second challenge was to reconcile the expectations the different participants in the research process had about it. In this case, the participants were the various groups and organizations in the movement at different levels (national and regional), and researchers and regional coordinators of the Knowledge Program. An additional challenge was to incorporate all the richness of the discussions during the working sessions, interviews and regional workshops, especially with the usual time constraints in the research agenda. This report on the results has tried to respond to these challenges and reflect the wealth of discussions in the best possible way.
