|Samenvatting||In the first chapter the paper assesses trends in urban growth, poverty, climate and food insecurity in East Africa and the consequences for city supply in horticulture products. It concludes that there is a need for building more resilient cities, enhancing urban food production, processing and distribution capacity, and diminishing the dependency on food imports from rural areas or from other regions. In the second chapter the paper analyses national and municipal policies in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Madagascar and examines their constraints and opportunities for (peri-)urban horticulture. It provides guidelines on how to better integrate urban and peri-urban agriculture in national and municipal policy-making and sectoral policies. The third chapter outlines a strategy for regional food systems, balancing urban and rural food supply, while chapter 4 discusses some strategies for coordination of (international) support to urban food supply and regional food systems.|
