SamenvattingIn Guinea Bissau, market access is still the farmers’ biggest problem, constraining local production, aggravating poverty and encouraging youth migration. Although there is a microfinance institution in Guinea Bissau, it suffered of low repayments, low women’s participation, and low community engagement. The author became intrigued as to why a poor community would not “grab the village bank opportunity” to foster their productivity and economic improvement. How can a local NGO providing extension services on poverty reduction and local development empower communities by a “valorisation” of local resources improving their access to financial services and the market? How can kit ensure community ownership and gender balance? One of the conclusions is that many studies tend to be less productive when the researcher is unfamiliar with the context in which data collection is being carried out.
