Search4Dev Help

Browse: Use the browse option to obtain publication lists of organizations or authors.

Search: To conduct a quick search, enter your search terms in the search box in the left menu. The advanced search option allows you to limit your search to a specific field, document type or date range.

Searching for words: You can perform a search on an exact word or a phrase of words. For instance, if you type 'research and policy' in one search box, you will retrieve the exact text phrase 'research and policy'. To find records which contain both the terms 'research' and 'policy' type 'research' in the first search box, choose 'and', and type 'policy' in the second search box.

Punctuation: All punctuation marks entered in a search box are ignored and treated as spaces.

Case sensitive: There is no difference in the search process between capital letters or lower case letters.

Wildcards: To broaden your search with word variations and the plural word form, include an asterisk * at the end of a word. For example, evaluat*, will look for evaluate, evaluation, evaluator, etc.

Short and long displays: Click on a title in the short display to view the full description of a publication as well as additional options, including a link to the full text.

Basket: Records can be temporarily stored with the 'add to basket' function which is available in the long display. Your basket will be saved for 2 hours as long as you don't close the browser. The basket holdings can be accessed from the advanced search screen or the search results screen.

Email or download: You can choose to email or download records that are temporarily stored in the basket.

Author: To search for an author, type 'lastname, initial(s).prefix' without spaces, include periods between initials. For example, for documents by prof. Johan van Benthem, use the search string 'Benthem,j' (which may also find another author J.J. Benthem, if there is one) or 'Benthem,j.f.a.k. van' if you know the full name.

Linking: To link to a record, use the URL that is provided at the end of a record.
